Necaxa Shocks León 2-1 Despite Early Red Card

On Friday, March 14, Necaxa pulled off a huge win. They defeated league leaders León 2-1. Even more impressively, they played with 10 men for over an hour. La Fiera suffered its second straight loss. Now, their top spot is in danger.

A Strong Start for Necaxa

From the kickoff, both teams showed attacking intent. This made the match one of the most exciting encounters of Matchday 12 in the Clausura 2025 Liga MX. Then, in the 16th minute, Necaxa struck first. Johan Rojas unleashed a stunning right-footed shot from outside the box. Assisted by Alejandro Mayorga, his goal gave the home side a 1-0 lead.

However, Necaxa’s joy did not last long. Just 10 minutes later, in the 26th minute, Alejandro Andrade received a red card. This forced Necaxa to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match. Despite the disadvantage, the team displayed incredible resilience and determination.

Cambindo Doubles the Lead

Rather than collapsing under pressure, Necaxa responded brilliantly. Seven minutes after going down to 10 men, Kevin Rosero created a moment of magic. On the right flank, he dribbled past two defenders. Then, he delivered a pinpoint cross into the box. Díber Cambindo was in the perfect position. With a clinical touch, he finished the play, extending the lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute. Consequently, this goal confirmed Cambindo as the league’s top scorer with 11 goals.

León’s Late Response Falls Short

León pushed hard for a comeback. They dominated possession in the second half. Head coach Eduardo “Toto” Berizzo made key substitutions to increase the pressure. In the 75th minute, they finally broke through. James Rodríguez set up Jhonder Cádiz, who put it in the back of the net. The score was now 2-1

León kept attacking in the final 15 minutes. Necaxa, however, defended with discipline. Goalkeeper Ezequiel Unsaín made crucial saves. In the 74th minute, José Rodríguez denied León an earlier goal. His intervention helped Necaxa hold on.

Necaxa Climbs the Standings

Thanks to this hard-fought victory, Necaxa moved up to fifth place with 21 points. They now have seven wins and five losses. Meanwhile, León’s position at the top of the table is in danger. América could surpass them with a win against Atlas on Saturday.

Upcoming Matches

Looking ahead, both teams will return to action for Matchday 13 after the March international break. First, León will host Pumas at home. They will aim to regain momentum. Meanwhile, Necaxa will remain at Estadio Victoria to face Querétaro’s Gallos Blancos.

Elsewhere in Liga MX, Paraguayan Rodrigo Bogarín’s goal secured a 1-0 victory for Querétaro over Mazatlán. Furthermore, the weekend will feature exciting clashes. Tigres UANL will host Santos Laguna. San Luis will visit Cruz Azul. Guadalajara will take on Juárez FC. Additionally, reigning champions América will face Atlas in a pivotal match.
